NASEM: National Academics of Science, Engineering, and Medicine
Drs. LaPlaca and Lockhart participated in the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) Traumatic Brain Injury Forum event “Innovation Trends in Technologies for the Prevention, Treatment, and Management of Traumatic Brain Injury: A Workshop” on April 15, 2024, in Washington, DC. Dr. Michelle LaPlaca, PI of the BRAIN partner site at Georgia Tech was a member of the organizing committee and also shared her insight on data science as the moderator in the “Clinical Decision Support, from Data to Impact” panel. Highlights included presentations and discussion on how to bring multi-modal data to actionable clinical decision support tools. Dr. Thurmon Lockhart, a BRAIN-funded investigator at Arizona State University, was a speaker in the “Prevention” panel, framing the problem of falls, which are the most common way to sustain a traumatic brain injury, especially in the elderly. Dr. Lockhart’s talk “Innovative Approaches to Fall Prevention” presented the latest technology in fall protection, prevention, and prediction, giving examples of his own research in wireless sensors and machine learning methods used to predict falls before they happen. The workshop addressed these and other technological advances that are expected to make a positive impact on brain injury patients in the short term, ultimately improving the quality of life for patients and their caregivers.
