The BRAIN Center

The Building Reliable Advances and Innovations in Neurotechnology (BRAIN) Center is an Industry/University Cooperative Research Center that began with Arizona State University (ASU) and the University of Houston (UH). This partnership has grown by adding two international sites, Miguel Hernandez University in Spain, Instituto Tecnologico de Monterrey in Mexico, and three prospective national sites, Georgia Tech,  University of Maryland Baltimore County, and West Virginia University allowing rigorous testing of efficacy, safety and long-term reliability of neurotechnology that would not be otherwise possible within the traditional ‘silos’ of academic, industry, regulatory and clinical communities.

The BRAIN Center will develop safe, effective and affordable personalized neurotechnologies for diagnostics, restoration, enhancement, and rehabilitation of sensory, motor, affective and cognitive functions. This mission will be pursued by supporting innovative interdisciplinary research across the multiple dimensions of brain function and behavior with the ultimate goal of improving quality of life.

Our
Mission

Workforce Development

In addition to its research initiatives, BRAIN will also focus on workforce development through training and education of (a) technical and scientific visionaries who will lead industry driven neurotechnology initiatives, (b) R&D managers who can execute the technical vision, (c) engineers who can analyze, design, and maintain neurotechnologies and understand their broader environmental and social impacts, and (d) future educators in neurotechnology innovation. BRAIN Site Directors will closely interact with the Academic Advisory Board (AAB) to develop an Entrepreneurship Program across institutions that will target from pre-college students to postdoctoral fellows and Center’s faculty.
